In 2009 the famous movie “Avatar” was inspired by the amazing exotic works, fantasy landscapes, creatures and colours of ROGER DEAN.
Over sixty million copies of his work has been sold world wide, but his journey began in 1968 with his first album cover for THE GUN and ATOMIC ROOSTER’S album “In Hearing of… “ This gave the way for Roger Dean and his style to be famous.
In that year his work attracted widespread attention beginning a partnership with
(at the times) a progressive rock band “YES” with their first album Fragile.
Dean has said, “I don’t really think of myself as a fantasy artist but as a landscape painter.”
Though he primarily works with watercolour paints, many of his paintings make use of multiple media, including gouache, ink, enamel, crayon and collage. In addition to his cover paintings, Dean is respected for his calligraphic work, designing logos and titles to go with his paintings.
Roger Dean was born in 1944 and is known as and English artist, designer, architect and publisher. Even though he was born in England he spent most of his childhood away in Greece, Cyprus and Hong Kong.
I think growing up in these amazing architectural, vibrant, cultural places really influenced his creative thoughts, giving him a collaborative style and direction.
His unique vision was responsible for some of the most iconic imagery of the 1970s and 80s.
